RS 232 Informatie

Overzichts pagina van de pin aansluitingen die voor komen bij RS-232 :

All RS-232 serial cables are one of the following 6 types:

WHAT are the RS-232 pins, and what do they do?

Answer: view table here

HOW do I know if either system uses flow control?

Answer: Read the manual. If you are still not sure, create a cable with "NULLED" flow control to trick both systems that it is always active.

WHAT if one system has flow control and the other doesn't?

Answer: In this case, flow control can not be used. Create a cable with "NULLED" flow control to trick the system that it is always active.

HOW do I know if I need a cross over cable?

Answer1: Read the manual.
Answer2: Using a multi-meter to measure Volts with NO cable connected.  The idea of this is to prevent the transmit pin on the left system being connected to the transmit pin on the right system.

On the left system put the black probe on the ground pin (pin 5 on DB9 or pin 7 on DB25).  Put the red probe on pin 2, then try pin 3, which ever has a negative voltage is transmit.  Select two of the following tables that match on the left hand side.  Repeat the probe test on the right system. Select the matching table from the previous two.  Read the answer in the middle.

Pin Descriptions

Name
Description
Tx (Output) Transmit of data
Rx (Input) Receiver of data
Gnd Ground.  The common earth signal between systems.
Rts (Output) Request To Send.  Connected to Cts on other system.  This indicates it is "Clear To Send" to the other system.
Cts (Input) Clear To Send.  Connected to Rts on other system.  This system has been informed it is "Clear To Send" to the other system.
Dcd (Input) Data Carrier Detect.  Normally used with modems to indicate a data connection has been established.
Dtr (Output) Data Terminal Ready.   Connected to Dsr on other system.  This indicates it is "Ready" to the other system.
Dsr (Input) Data Set Ready.  Connected to Dtr on other system.  This system has been informed other system is "Ready".
Ring Phone line ringing.  Normally used with modems to indicate phone line is ringing.
